Bangalore Police Issuing Challan for Using Bluetooth Devices on Two-Wheelers

In a recent announcement, the Bangalore police prohibited the use of Bluetooth enabled devices. Authorities also barred the use of headphones while driving a car or riding a motorcycle. The government finds headphones and Bluetooth devices a distraction while driving. However, the two-wheelers Helmet Manufacturers Associations is opposing the decision and showcasing its support for the technology.

Worldwide, the technology has been recognised as a convenience feature. It also does dissuade citizens from using their handheld devices due to the ease of use. Mobile phone technology has now integrated into our lives, and many people use phones while driving and riding for navigation. However, this is dangerous and may lead to an accident endangering the lives of the occupants as well as other road users. But Bluetooth devices may minimise the risk of accidents as the driver/rider is able to hear directions on the Bluetooth devices without having to touch their phones.

Practical Technology for Motorcyclists

Bluetooth usage becomes logical and straightforward as almost everyone today traversing the complex streets of metropolitan cities require guidance from GPS technology. Nearly all the smartphones today also come with GPS directions and maps. However, using the map while riding a motorcycle may be particularly distracting. Here, using a Bluetooth device, the rider is able to hear the directions and follow the route safely without having to take their eyes off the road.

Mr Rajeev Kapur, President of, Two Wheelers Helmet Manufacturers Association, also comments that “India is not the only country to adopt it”. Many advanced countries such as the USA have adopted the technology. However, one should not use the same device to listen to music, make or receive phone calls. This could distract the rider and cause an accident. Mr Kashish Kapur, Director, Steelbird Hi-Tech India Limited, also commented that the devices are safe. Users do not need to depend on their directional knowledge or ask passersby. The use of Bluetooth devices also negates the rider gazing at the phone during navigation. This takes out risks to their own lives and also other road users.
