Summer Tips for Bikes

Summer is knocking at the door and we all crave to trip around in the nearby areas. The temperature will be super high but this is the ideal time to trip on the weekend. It is the perfect weather when you can get your motorbike out of the garage to take it to a planned destination and ride.

With the wind of change, our body starts adjusting and slowly prepares to get it in a long way. Similarly, bikes need an overall behavioural change as per the temperature. Be it the coolant, or tyre pressure, or fan functioning or tyre treads or any related things associated with the bike needs to be taken care of!

Your bike is your baby, isn’t it! The way you take care of yourself on any change of temperature you should take care of your bike too! This undoubtedly enhances the sustenance feature of the bike on a long-term basis.

Handful Tips for your Summer rides on the bike

Stranded in the middle of nowhere with your bike, and something went wrong in the peak summer is a biker’s darkest nightmare! As it is said prevention is better to tackle any situation. We say its maintenance is much better than repairing. Taking simple steps timely will help in the long run.

To make your summer rides more joyful, certain parameters need to be checked for running smoothly on the roads.

1. Switch your Coolant

The most vital thing that you need to look into is the coolant. Riding a liquid-cooled bike drains the coolant fast. It is piped in your radiator and loses the heat absorption properties. This further makes it behave like a cooling liquid that is normal like tap water.

Do you want this to happen to your radiator! Surely not, then change the coolant of your bike. This will protect the rising summer temperature with quicker cooling facilities. It is like keeping your bike hydrated for the long run.

2. Don’t be Afraid of Packing it All

Riding early in the morning or in the after in the scorching heat is not a big deal if you aren’t afraid of packing it all. Here’s some life that you should carry, which are listed below;

  • GPS Unit
  • Flat Repair Kit
  • Portable Air Compressor
  • Rain Gear
  • Emergency communicator
  • Earplugs (for protecting your ear to avoid excessive noise)
  • Spare keys and owner’s manual

3. Check on your Bike Tyre Pressure

You must have heard reports like tyre bursting out in the middle of the road trips! This is very regular on summer days. The only reason that makes it happen is the temperature. The expansion of the air in tyres starts affecting the increased summer afternoon temperature.

A rise in the temperature leads to expansion of the elements like solid, liquid, and gas. Thus, when you are at a gas station topping up with your tyre- remember to keep your tyre pressure 1-2 units down. It is a recommended unit.

Note: It is advised to go for nitrogen for your bike tyres. It helps in controlling normal air. Nitrogen stabilizes the temperature and stops the expansion of the tyre beyond the permissible limit. This is much safer for summer rides.

4. Check on the Fan Functioning Radiator

If your bike has a liquid-cooled system then you should notice the radiator fan, whether it is working properly or not! We all are very reluctant in this case. We hardly check on this thing! Well, to keep your bike healthy & operative, start checking on it.

It is important to check on the radiator fan while using a strong water splash or high-pressure water force is applied. This damages the radiator and disturbs the cooling system. Make sure you prioritize this factor and keep using slow water splash on your bike.

5. Have you checked your tyre treads!

A road trip in the summer days is amazing, though the tyre fades away due to hotter weather. The rate of worn-out of the tyre gel in summer is considerably higher at scale. If you are using an old bike then you must check the tyre tread parameter regularly as it is approaching the end of the tyres life.

6. Never Brim Bike tank to the Neck

High temperatures in Summer expand the liquid so no need to full your bike tank to the neck. As the temperature increases, fuel expands, and overflowing of the bike tank is likely to take place. To keep your vehicle in control, park it under the shed, to protect the shine and get it less heated. This won’t let the heat get absorbed on the bike’s seat and make it difficult for you to sit on it.

Note: Keep a check on the fuel pipe timely. As it is made of rubber, often it tends to develop cracks due to high temperature in summer and the fuel slowly leaks out!

7. Engine Fins needs Cleaning

For your information, air-cooled/oil-cooled are made to dissipate as much heat as it came from a bike. This makes it important for you to clean the engine fins. Dirty fins do not let the air pass through them, hence the engine is affected badly.

Note: Keep engine fins clean to avoid the engine acting like an oven roasting your legs.

Summer mornings are great, yet till the afternoon you are roasted in heat. The same goes for your bike. Listed tips if followed then you’ll surely have a great summer riding experience on the bike. Instead of spending an ample amount of money on your bike in one go, keep maintaining it and you will enjoy a smooth summer ride and even travel a longer distance with ease.
